Version 14.19

OP Patient Portal: Glossary -- Extended Demographics

Extended Demographics information is a term used in the realm of Meaningful Use which stands for information regarding a patient's race, ethnicity, and spoken languages. To be compliant with [Meaningful Use], all patient records are required to have this information recorded, even if that information is in a state of "unknown" or "choose not to answer".

Office Practicum offers various ways to gather this data. Our recommended way is to use the patient portal's Register Family form to gather this information during the registration process. If you have enabled the option in the administration area, you can simply collect the information by having parents register their patients.

Alternatively, some practices don't wish to collect this information via the web because they fear some people will either take offense to, or simply not be comfortable with, the collection of this information in the context of a web form. They may wish to collect it when the parents bring their children into the office for the first time. Also, if you wish to explain the reasoning for collecting this information to the patient, and have them enter the information later, you can always point them in the direction of the Update Patient area of your patient portal, where it can be changed at any time by a registered portal user.
